This week, a shockingly simple old-school Italian dessert and cocktail for July 4 and the smoldering days ahead. No ice-cream maker required, only a fork and freezer. Plus, a roundup of amazing work made by women I’ve been devouring.

G’day!

Instead of writing the intro, I really wanted to talk to you, so I’ve recorded one. Have a listen and let me know what you think. I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Summa!!! I miss my buddies. We live too far away from each other. We usually hang together on the 4th.
  • I’m Intrigued about Olivia Wilde’s new movie, The Invite. Has anyone seen it? Thoughts? I love that she keeps taking big swings. After listening to Ed Norton on the podcast by Dana Carvey & David Spade, it sounds like Olivia made brave directorial choices. It’d be hard not to feel intimidated directing that caliber of talent, and yourself, while taking risks. I’ve always adored Ed Norton as an actor. He is an actor’s actor. Effortless. Relaxed. Like no one else but himself.

  • “Salt then Sour Then Sweet”, the duet between Sarah Bareilles and Brandi Carlile, is easy on the ears. It’s also got me curious about Sara’s new album, Good Grief. As did this. And this. This Rolling Stone interview with Bareilles is a perfect weekend read with a coffee.

  • I need to hurry up and watch Come See Me in the Good Light.

  • I listened to Katie Couric on Call Her Daddy while I made dinner one night. I didn't know much about her story, but she's overcome an extraordinary amount of adversity and sexism.

  • I ran into my friend Leslie near the meats counter at Union Market, and she told me to listen to The Interview with comedian and actor Robby Hoffman. I went straight home, pressed play, and made Chicken Piccata for Ned and I. (I’ll share the recipe soon.)What a breath of fresh air. What a talent. I also asked Leslie what she was making for dinner: summer rolls with peanut sauce. The wonderful Andrea Nguyen’s recipe and demo make them a weeknight cinch.

  • At the beginning of summer, I found myself in Aritzia with Opal and picked up this black poplin dress that people have stopped me on the street to ask where I got it. It was a find. It has pockets. And it’s on sale!

  • My friend Marty gifted me the Nécessaire Rosemary Shampoo and Conditioner. After years, I mean years, of dealing with a dry scalp (thanks, hormones), it has miraculously balanced the scalp’s pH. Now I want to try the Scalp Serum. This Eucalyptus Body Essentials Set would be a treat for traveling.

Have you been devouring anything we should all know about?

Love this design. Reminds me of iconic 1980s film posters.

Lemon Granita (Spun Into Three Creations)

Let me set a scene worth pursuing in this sultry weather. Think of creating a cinematic al fresco meal, even if it’s on the sidewalk. Let there be a tangle of legs under the table, and a tabletop where not all the pieces match but everything belongs and conversation flows.

For such a setup, you need this extremely simple, versatile recipe for lemon and basil granita. (The basil is optional if you prefer it straight up.)The herb-infused citrus syrup can be made ahead and spun into any of three glorious creations: granita, frozen lemons, or a sgroppino cocktail.
